Private Pilot Licence

Private Pilot Licence is considered a standard of general aviation in North America, it is the most popular type of licence. In many cases it is also the first step towards a Commercial Pilot Licence.

Main advantages of PPL
  • Can fly literally anywhere internationally as long as the airplane is registered in Canada!

  • Many countries have procedures to convert a Canadian PPL into a domestic version of similar licence/certificate

  • Can be used as the first licence towards CPL

  • Allows to carry 3 passengers

  • With extra training can be upgraded to let you fly at night, in bad weather or on a multi-engine airplane

Private Pilot Licence Requirements
  • Student Pilot Permit

  • Valid Category 1 or 3 Medical Certificate

  • 45 hours of Ground School

  • Successfully complete (60%) Transport Canada Private Pilot Written Exam

  • 25 Hrs Dual Flight Training Minimum

  • 20 Hrs Solo Flight Training Minimum

  • Successfully complete Private Pilot Flight Test

  • Instrument & Navigation Training

Note: Private Pilots in Canada cannot be hired or charge their passengers for the flight. You can still reasonably split the rental fees, gas and other costs.

With more flight hours logged in personal trips, many Private Pilots choose to obtain additional ratings (night, instrument, multi-engine) or eventually pursue a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).
