Frequently Asked Questions

A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the most popular type of aviation license in Canada and North America. It allows you to fly private aircraft for personal use, carry up to three passengers, and even fly internationally, as long as the airplane is registered in Canada. PPL holders can further upgrade their skills with additional ratings such as Night, Instrument, or Multi-Engine, opening up more flying opportunities.

To obtain a PPL in Canada, you must hold a Student Pilot Permit (SPP) and a valid Category 1 or 3 Medical Certificate. The training includes a minimum of 45 hours of Ground School, 25 hours of dual flight training, and 20 hours of solo flight training. You also need to pass the Transport Canada Private Pilot written exam and successfully complete a flight test.

No, a Private Pilot Licence does not allow you to get paid for flying or charge passengers for your flights. It is strictly for personal or recreational use. However, it is a stepping stone towards obtaining a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), which is required for professional flying and charging passengers.

A Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP) is a more basic license that allows you to fly within Canada with one passenger. It is less time-consuming and more affordable than a PPL. However, a PPL grants you more privileges, including the ability to fly internationally and carry more passengers. RPP holders can later upgrade to a PPL with additional flight hours and training.

After obtaining a PPL, you can enhance your flying skills by acquiring additional ratings, such as Night Rating, Instrument Rating, and Multi-Engine Rating. These upgrades allow you to fly in more challenging conditions, including night flights, bad weather, and with multi-engine aircraft, further expanding your flying opportunities and career potential.
