Frequently Asked Questions

Instrument Rating is an advanced certification that allows pilots to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). It enhances flight safety by enabling pilots to navigate in low visibility or adverse weather conditions. This rating is crucial for pilots who wish to continue their training toward a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or improve their overall flying abilities.

To obtain an Instrument Rating, you must have a minimum of 70% on the written Instrument Rating (INRAT) exam, 50 hours of cross-country flight as Pilot-in-Command (PIC), and 40 hours of instrument flight time. Additional requirements include dual instruction, cross-country flight under simulated or actual IMC conditions, and meeting specific flight time criteria set by Transport Canada.

The duration of an Instrument Rating course varies depending on individual progress, but typically it requires a minimum of 50 hours of flight time, including both cross-country and instrument flight hours. With consistent training, most pilots can expect to complete the course within a few months.

An Instrument Rating allows pilots to fly in a wider range of weather conditions and makes flight planning more flexible. It also increases safety by teaching pilots how to fly safely under IFR, especially during low visibility situations. This rating is a stepping stone for pilots aspiring to obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL).

Yes, you can begin Instrument Rating training immediately after obtaining your PPL. This rating is a popular next step for many pilots who wish to enhance their flying skills and gain more flexibility in their flight planning. You will need a valid medical certificate and must meet the required flight hours and exam criteria to begin your Instrument Rating course.
